Thousands of Hasidic Jews from around the world are gathering in the Ukrainian city of Uman for a yearly pilgrimage marked by singing, dancing and prayer. The pilgrims crowding the city’s streets are mostly men in black hats or kippas coming to pray at the tomb of Rabbi Nahman — a revered leader of their traditionalist movement. On the pilgrimage days for a week around the Jewish New Year, this sleepy, dusty town of 90000 inhabitants some 200 kilometres (124 miles) south of Kiev is transformed into a multilingual hub of the Hasidic movement. The celebrations are a way for Hasidic Jews to get back to the roots of their movement in the heart of eastern Europe more than 60 years after the Holocaust. The stream of pilgrims makes its way down Pushkin street to a large metal structure covering the tomb of Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav and two synagogues filled with believers who pray here for hours on end. Rabbi Nahman, also known as a tzadik or spiritual master, died in Uman in 1810, having urged his followers to gather by his tomb to celebrate Rosh Hashana, or Jewish New Year. This year up to 25000 Hasidic Jews, most of them from Israel and the United States, heed his call and attend the celebrations. The Hasidic tradition, founded in the 18th century in Belarus and Ukraine, places special emphasis on joyous communion with God. The singing and dancing give Uman a festive air. With Hasidic music pouring out of CD-players and laptop computers, pilgrims dance in circles and sing all …

VINNews – New York – He has numerous albums to his credit, but unlike most Jewish singers, Beit Shemesh resident Yosef Karduner shuns the spotlight, preferring instead to live his life following the directives of R’ Nachman of Breslov. He lives simply, devotes his life to prayer and learning and spends at least one hour a day immersed in hitbodedut, the practice of conversing privately with Hashem in a secluded location in order to gain a clearer understanding of oneself and establish an intimate relationship with Hashem. As a child, Karduner was one of the best soccer players on the Pe’el Petach Tikva youth team. But while everyone expected him to play ball professionally, his career was short lived. Karduner sprained his ankle in his first game played on Shabbos in just the first minute of play, ending his career in soccer. Soccer’s loss was music’s gain as Karduner focused on his love of music, singing and playing the guitar. After being inducted into the Israel army, he was accepted into the prestigious Lahakat Pikud Hatzafon, a prestigious IDF musical troupe which for many of Israel’s most popular singers, served as an entrée into their civilian music careers. After serving his time in the IDF, Karduner joined a rock group and played bass guitar for popular Israeli singer, songwriter and composer Uzi Hitman. Hitman’s father, who came from an old time Lubavitch family, was a positive influence on Karduner, speaking with him about the purpose of life and the importance …

A Kumsitz With The Always Enlightening Yosef Karduner Sunday, November 1, 2009 At The Rock House 550 w. 110th St. In NYC Yosef Karduner, Breslevs sweet singer whos a household word on both sides of the Atlantic, One would imagine that a world-famous singer and composer would have his nose high in the air. Not Yosef; his manner is calm and quiet. He doesnt say much, but each word that he speaks in his soft but firm voice is certainly worth hearing. Yosef Karduners mind doesnt leave the realm of holiness; when hes not learning Torah or speaking to Hashem in prayer and hitbodedut, hes working on his latest music project or engaged in helping his wife Vered raise their six lovely children, ages 5 months to 10 years. “On stage, Yosef doesnt make an effort to put on a show for the audience. He does what he knows how to do best, namely, he sings in order to cling to Hashem. His catchy, honey-sweet, and soul-piercing melodies uplift everyone that hears them. The enchanted listeners laugh, cry, dance, and flow with the Karduner melody stream. Theyre with him in body and soul.”
